Digital Etiquette
Digital Etiquette can be defined as "electronic standards of conduct or procedure." (Ribble, 2011, p.11) Digital Etiquette refers to how we interact with technology, how we interact with digital content, and how we interact with other individuals using technology. Digital etiquette also known as netiquette, is a very important issue to be addressed with students in the classroom. There have been many problems that have arisen in regards to appropriate use of technology and appropriate interaction with other individual through the use of technology. Teaching digital etiquette plays a vital role in teaching students how to respect the work of others, how to respect the opinions of others, as well as how to protect themselves when using digital technology.
Cyber bullying is one of the most crucial topics when referring to digital etiquette. Bullying in general has become a great focus in education in recent years. Cyber bullying has become a major part of this trend. The increased use of the internet by students has porvided them with a way to harass other students anonymously thus providing a safety shield for the bully and leaving the victim feeling unfairly exposed, hurt, embarrassed and scared. We have had numerous bullying incidences in our school that have originated from a digital setting including online posts, text messages, and emails. Teaching students the appropriate ways to interact online and how to respond if they find themselves being harassed is an important part in helping our students stay safe while using technology as well as helping them to be successful in and out of school settings.

What can we do to stop cyber bullying?
Parents and educators must work together to promote good digital etiquette and reduce cyber bullying. One of the most important approaches to this is to have consistent and open discussions about what students are doing online and the proper manners to be using while online. Knowing and monitoring what students are doing online opens the doors for discussion about digital etiquette and how to respond to cyber bullying. Teaching children the following simple digital etiquette rules can help them to remember how to interact with others online and how to protect themselves from bullies.
- Say only what you would say to a person's face
- Don't use rude words
- Do not hurt other's feelings
- Be clear in your subject and your message
- Check your spelling
- Don't type in UPPERCASE letters. It looks like your are SHOUTING!
- Remember that people cannot see your face or hear your tone of voice, so use smiley emotions so people will understand you better.
- Cool off before responding to messages in anger
- Tell an adult if someone upsets you
- REMEMBER: Anything you send or post online can be copied and pasted, then sent to someone else. Once it's out there, it's IMPOSSIBLE to get it back. So don't send or post anything that you wouldn't want your teachers, parents, coaches, and future employers or college admissions people to see.
